SETT Teacher Supports Student Success

Residency program helps future educators guide Ernie Pyle students in bilingual learning and achievement.

The Special Education Teacher Training program continues to support future educators while helping Albuquerque Public Schools students reach important academic milestones.

SETT is a year-long residency partnership between APS, Albuquerque Teachers Federation, Central New Mexico Community College and The University of New Mexico. Through the program, teacher residents gain hands-on experience working alongside experienced educators in APS classrooms.

One of those residents is Ofelia Gonzalez, a UNM SETT Teacher Resident completing her residency at Ernie Pyle Middle School. Gonzalez works closely with students as they pursue their Bilingual Seal, a recognition earned through academic achievement in both English and Spanish.

Middle school students can earn the bilingual seal by completing half of their academic coursework in English, the other half in Spanish and developing a portfolio that showcases their learning. The student-driven program celebrates bilingualism, collaboration and academic excellence.

Before joining the SETT program, Gonzalez worked as a substitute teacher through Kelly Services. She now hopes to continue supporting APS students by teaching middle school math next school year.

The SETT residency program continues to create pathways for aspiring educators while helping students build the skills, habits and mindsets needed for future success.
