SETT Teacher Brings Learning to Life
Carlos Rey students explore science and nature through classroom partnerships and interactive experiences.
The Special Education Teacher Training program continues to create meaningful opportunities for both future educators and Albuquerque Public Schools students through hands-on, engaging learning experiences.
SETT is a year-long residency partnership between APS, Albuquerque Teachers Federation, Central New Mexico Community College and The University of New Mexico. The program allows teacher residents to learn alongside experienced educators while applying classroom theory in real-world settings.
One of those residents is Jana Buckwalter, a UNM SETT Teacher Resident placed at Carlos Rey Elementary School with cooperating teacher Kari Healey in the DPC PreK program under the leadership of Principal Judy Touloumis.
Healey has hosted several SETT Teacher Residents over the years and is known for creating dynamic learning experiences for both students and future educators. Through partnerships with organizations such as 4-H and the Department of Game and Fish, Healey and Buckwalter brought nature directly into the classroom this year.
DPC PreK students had the opportunity to help raise both chickens and trout as part of their learning experiences. The trout were later released, while the chickens will continue to be cared for by staff members.
The classroom activities gave students opportunities to learn through observation, responsibility and hands-on exploration while connecting science concepts to real-life experiences.
Educators say the experiences reflect their shared belief that students learn best when they are actively engaged and having fun. By incorporating interactive lessons into daily instruction, the classroom created an environment where curiosity and learning could thrive together.
