Poetry Moves at Alvarado Elementary
Annual "Poem in Your Pocket" tradition celebrates reading, memorization and National Poetry Month.
Students at Alvarado Elementary School celebrated National Poetry Month with one of the school’s favorite traditions — “Poem in Your Pocket.”
During the annual event, school staff and volunteers spread out across the playground while students traveled from station to station reading or reciting poems they had learned in class.
Each time students shared a poem, they earned a punch on their “Poem in Your Pocket” card, turning the celebration into a fun and interactive literacy experience.
The tradition encourages students to build confidence in reading and speaking while exploring poetry in creative ways. From memorized verses to favorite classroom poems, students proudly shared their work with staff, volunteers and classmates throughout the event.
School leaders said the event continues to be a joyful way to celebrate literacy, creativity and a love of poetry across the campus community.
