Mitchell Students Launch Handmade Balloons in STEM Project

Fourth and fifth graders teamed up with the Albuquerque Balloon Explorium for a hands-on balloon-building experience.

Students at Mitchell Elementary School recently took part in an exciting STEM project as Mrs. Montoya’s 5th grade class and Mr. Hawley’s 4th grade enrichment group worked together to design, build and launch their own balloons.

The project was supported by the Albuquerque Balloon Explorium, whose team helped guide students through the science behind balloon flight and assisted with the launch. The experience combined creativity, teamwork and real-world problem-solving, all while celebrating Albuquerque’s rich ballooning culture.

The result? A sky full of student-made balloons and a school full of proud young engineers.
