Mission Avenue Celebrates Families for Showing Up

Posted April 15, 2026, 8:00 AM. Updated April 10, 2026, 1:34 PM.

A morning celebration highlights the importance of on-time attendance and strong school-family partnerships.

A simple idea to celebrate families helped create a joyful start to the school day at Mission Avenue Elementary School.

Teacher Dawnielle Rodriguez recently attended professional development at the Ron Clark Academy with several colleagues. During her visit, she saw how the academy celebrates parents who ensure their children arrive at school on time by recognizing them during morning drop-off.

Inspired by the idea, Rodriguez partnered with Mission Avenue’s PTA to bring a similar celebration to their campus.

During the event, school counselor Denise Ortiz organized Student Council members to greet families and cheer for parents as they arrived at school. PTA volunteers handed out donuts while students held colorful posters created by staff member Cheryl Padilla-Maldonado to thank families for prioritizing attendance.

The celebration brought smiles to the faces of students, parents and staff, while reinforcing the important role families play in helping students start their day ready to learn.

School leaders say they hope the event will continue to strengthen the partnership between families and the school community while encouraging students to arrive on time each day.
