Jessica Chavez Named Principal of the Year
Dennis Chavez Elementary principal recognized for 22 years of service to Albuquerque students, families and educators.
Jessica Chavez, principal of Dennis Chavez Elementary School, has been named the Albuquerque Public Schools Principals and Assistant Principals Association Principal of the Year.
Chavez was recognized during the July 2026 New Mexico Coalition of Educational Leaders Conference, honoring her leadership and dedication to public education.
With 22 years in education, Chavez has spent her career serving students, families and educators in Albuquerque. She began as a classroom teacher, teaching kindergarten, first grade and second grade before moving into school leadership.
After one year as an assistant principal, Chavez became principal of Dennis Chavez Elementary, where she has led the school community for the past eight years.
“I am very honored to receive this award, although any of my success is because of the amazing team at Dennis Chavez Elementary,” Chavez said. “We have the very best teachers and staff. Our parents are incredibly supportive of our school, and our students are incredible. I have an amazing support team at Dennis Chavez who are willing to jump in and help however needed.”
A proud graduate of Manzano High School and the University of New Mexico, Chavez continues to support education and leadership throughout the community. She serves as president of the University of New Mexico College of Education and Human Sciences Alumni Board and president of the Albuquerque Public Schools Principal Association.
“In my role as APSPA President, I'm committed to working collaboratively with APS district leadership, while ensuring the voices of our principals and assistant principals are heard and advocating for support they need to thrive and lead their schools effectively,” Chavez added.
Chavez is passionate about public education, building strong school communities and developing future leaders. Her leadership reflects a commitment to supporting the students, families and staff of Dennis Chavez Elementary while contributing to the broader education community across New Mexico.
