A visit from local community workers marks the first step in a district-wide journey toward college and career readiness at Tres Volcanes Community Collaborative.

Learning came alive for first graders at Tres Volcanes Community Collaborative School as local community members stepped into the classroom (and the parking lot!) to share their professions. Students spent time engaging directly with a mail carrier, an attorney, and firefighters from the Bernalillo County Fire Department.

The interactive presentations offered students a hands-on look at the daily lives of local professionals, turning classroom lessons into real-world connections. The event planted crucial seeds for early-career awareness, moving young learners beyond the standard question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" and opening their eyes to the vast array of opportunities awaiting them.

This early exposure aligns directly with Albuquerque Public Schools' strategic initiative, the Academies of Albuquerque. While the Academies framework culminates in high school, the foundation begins in elementary school. At this early stage, standards-based instruction in literacy and numeracy works hand in hand with career awareness, sparking curiosity about how foundational academic skills apply to everyday professions.

As these students transition into middle school, the Academies initiative will guide them into smaller learning cohorts designed for deeper career exploration. By ninth grade, instruction shifts to developing life skills and real-world connected learning, eventually placing students in grades 10–12 into dedicated pathways for college and career readiness.

By engaging families and local professionals today, Tres Volcanes is ensuring that every student's educational journey begins with strong community connections and endless possibilities for the future.
