Hands-On Earth Day Learning Takes Root
Dolores Gonzales Students explore agriculture and sustainability through interactive Earth Day activities and partnerships.
Students at Dolores Gonzales Elementary celebrated Earth Day with a full day of hands-on learning focused on sustainability, agriculture and caring for the environment.
The school partnered with Bernalillo County Solid Waste Services, Bernalillo County 4-H, New Mexico Agriculture in the Classroom and the ABQ BioPark to create a dynamic Earth Day experience for students.
Throughout the day, students explored the power of healthy soil, learned about the essential elements of agriculture, and discovered the joys and responsibilities of raising animals. Community partners provided interactive lessons that helped students better understand where food comes from and how caring for the land supports healthy communities.
Students also stepped outside the classroom to participate in a campus cleanup, taking pride in helping care for their school environment.
By the end of the day, every student left with a planted seed and the knowledge needed to help it grow. The experience reinforced the importance of sustainability, stewardship and food sovereignty while showing students how small actions can make a big difference for the planet.
