Over 1,100 students showed up for the best middle school soccer season yet.

The 2026 Albuquerque Public Schools Middle School Soccer season wrapped up with exciting championship matches, unforgettable moments and a powerful reminder of what school athletics can provide for students.

This year, 29 APS middle schools participated in the program, giving more than 1,100 students the opportunity to play competitive soccer. Supported through a partnership between the City of Albuquerque, NMSYA, Bernalillo County, ABC and APS, the program was designed to introduce students to the sport who may not otherwise have the chance to play.

Despite freezing temperatures during the championship games, families, school staff and supporters packed the sidelines to cheer on students throughout the tournament.

The girls championship featured George I. Sanchez Middle School and Jefferson Middle School in a matchup that showcased both skill and sportsmanship, with Jefferson taking the win. On the boys side, Ernie Pyle Middle School and Washington Middle School battled through regulation and two overtime periods before Washington claimed the title.

Beyond the scores, the season highlighted perseverance, teamwork and growth. Coaches served not only as instructors, but also as mentors and motivators for students throughout the season.

Many teams entered the season with varying levels of experience, but students consistently demonstrated determination and school spirit. Educators say the program reflected APS Goal 4, helping students build the skills, habits and mindsets needed for success in school and life.

For APS students, the season was about far more than wins and losses. It was about belonging, opportunity and community.
