Fifth graders join mayor for ribbon-cutting of newly renovated “Running Wild” exhibit.

Fifth-grade students from Dolores Gonzales Elementary School had a unique opportunity to take part in a major community celebration at the ABQ BioPark Zoo.

Students joined Mayor Tim Keller to help cut the ribbon for the zoo’s newly renovated exhibit, “Running Wild: Cheetahs and More.” The updated space replaces the decades-old Catwalk exhibit and features expanded habitats for animals such as cheetahs, bobcats, ocelots and other small mammals.

The event marked the official opening of the $2.4 million project, giving students a front-row seat to an exciting moment for the community.

With their school mascot being the tiger, the experience was especially meaningful for Dolores Gonzales students, who could connect their school identity to real-world wildlife conservation efforts.

The hands-on experience gave students a chance to engage with their community, learn about animal habitats and be part of a memorable moment they won’t soon forget.
