Cops for Kids Brings Holiday Magic to APS Families
McKinney-Vento and APD partner to create an unforgettable day of festive surprises.
Joy and holiday spirit filled Main Event on Sunday as dozens of Albuquerque Public Schools students participated in this year’s Cops for Kids celebration. The long-running event, now in its 31st year, is hosted by the Albuquerque Police Department and brings holiday cheer to families in need.
Children served through the APS McKinney-Vento Program, which supports students experiencing homelessness or hardship, were among those selected. Families are referred through APS, law enforcement partners and social service agencies. This year, APD planned to support 50 children and their families based on household need.
The excitement began as soon as students arrived. A police helicopter landing outside thrilled many of the younger children. Once inside, families had exclusive access to Main Event. They enjoyed arcade games, dancing, basketball, bowling, music and plenty of smiles.
Students took photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus and received blue candy canes. The Grinch also made a surprise appearance, adding to the fun and laughter.
Events like Cops for Kids help create special memories for students, while reinforcing the importance of community support during the holiday season. APS McKinney-Vento staff shared their appreciation for APD’s ongoing partnership and commitment to uplifting families.
From the helicopter landing to the hugs for Santa, the celebration offered a day of joy and connection for children across Albuquerque.
