Building Connections and Community at McKinney-Vento

Posted October 10, 2025, 9:25 AM. Updated October 10, 2025, 9:25 AM.

Drop-in programs for youth and teens provide a safe space to connect, share a meal and access support.

At McKinney-Vento, we started our drop in program for our youth and teens. We have two separate programs running on the same day for both groups, students are invited into the building to check in with staff, to build relationships with staff and peers, to have meaningful opportunities, and to eat in a family style setting.

For our youth drop in program, we have 29 students enrolled. In September, the APS Board of Education came to the program to assist and interact with the youth. They also assisted the youth in putting on their brand new shoes!

For our teen drop in program, we have five to seven students who come regularly. Students are invited to participate in games and activities, while accessing their immediate needs like food, clothing and shoes, in addition to having an opportunity to connect with staff for intensive case management.
