Building Confidence and Independence at Marie Hughes
Special education program helps students grow through life skills and inclusive learning.
Students in the Social Communication Support program at Marie Hughes Elementary School are building confidence, independence and meaningful connections throughout the school day.
In Stephanie Alexander’s classroom, students participate in hands-on learning experiences that support both academic and life skills. For student Esias, that includes time in the classroom kitchenette preparing foods like muffins, pizza, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. These activities help students practice daily living skills while building independence and pride in their accomplishments.
Beyond the classroom, Esias is also engaging with his fourth-grade peers during physical education and recess, strengthening friendships and building confidence in social settings.
Alexander said the program has made strong early progress in creating a structured and supportive learning environment for students.
“The classroom has quickly developed into a structured, supportive environment where consistent routines and intentional design are driving meaningful outcomes,” Alexander said. “Learners are responding positively to individualized supports such as visual schedules and clear transition systems, which are helping them participate more fully throughout the school day.”
Students in the program also access general education specials alongside their peers, helping foster connections and a sense of belonging within the broader school community.
Esias’s mother, Meghan Martinez, said the support her son receives has made a meaningful difference.
“Esias is experiencing growth not only academically through personalized support, but also socially and emotionally as he is building confidence, communication skills and independence,” Martinez said. “He is also developing important life skills and self-advocacy abilities that are preparing him for success beyond the classroom.”
Educators at Marie Hughes say the program reflects the district’s commitment to inclusive practices that ensure every student has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
