APS Partners with Comcast to Provide Affordable Internet to Families on a Tight Budget

Families may qualify if they have at least one child who is eligible for the National School Lunch Program.

Imagine trying to do a job without the proper tools of the trade: a builder without a hammer, a chef without a knife, a painter without a brush.

One of the most important tools for students today is access to the Internet. In Albuquerque Public Schools, students of all ages use technology on a regular basis to complete assignments, research, and projects. It allows them to explore, question, challenge and connect. Students who don’t have this access at home often are at a disadvantage.

Which is why Albuquerque Public Schools is partnering with Comcast to provide affordable Internet to families on a tight budget. Called Internet EssentialsSM from Comcast, you may qualify if you have at least one child who is eligible for the National School Lunch Program, or if you receive public assistance such as housing assistance, Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, and others.

Features of Internet Essentials include:

  • High-speed Internet service for $9.95 + tax per month
  • No credit check, no term contract
  • No installation fee
  • In-home WiFi included
  • Limited access to Xfinity WiFi hotspots outside the home
  • The option to purchase a refurbished desktop or laptop for $149.99 + tax which includes Microsoft Office, Norton Security Suite, and a 90-day warranty
  • Free in-person and online digital training classes

We want all our students to have the opportunity to do their homework at home, and we are excited to tell you about programs like Internet Essentials from Comcast that may be helpful to your family.

With Internet and WiFi at home, you also will be able to log in to ParentVUE, which provides secure, private access to school and student information including assignments, grades, attendance, calendars, teacher contacts and more.

You can also use the Internet to learn about resources and activities for students and families through the district’s new digital flyer program, Peachjar. It’s a more modern, accessible, and eco-friendly format for information sharing. And another reason to get online.

Internet Essentials is not a school or district program and you are not required to purchase it. But if you think this is a tool that will help your child learn and keep your family connected, we encourage you to sign up.
