Outstanding December Employees
This month's honorees include a community support liaison, a clerk, a behavior redirector and a dean of students.
Albuquerque Public Schools has many dedicated professionals who devote their time and talent to helping the district meet the needs of students. For the seventh year, the district recognizes at least a few of these outstanding employees through the Employee Recognition Program. All staff members employed for at least six months can be nominated, though we ask that you not nominate yourself.

The honorees are being featured on APS electronic billboards around town and will be honored at a reception. They also will receive a lasting memento.
Michael Detimmerman – Community Support Liaison, Transition Services
Michael Detimmerman is a guiding force for students as they prepare for life after graduation. In his role as Community Support Liaison for the Transition Services Program, Michael demonstrates a deep commitment to helping students secure employment and advocate for their needs. A colleague noted, “He guides students through the job search process, helping them identify their strengths and career goals while equipping them with essential self-advocacy skills.”
His work fosters student confidence and independence, empowering them to shape their futures. But Michael’s impact goes beyond guidance; he actively creates opportunities by organizing job readiness workshops and forming valuable employer partnerships.
“His dedication has significantly increased job placement rates among students in the Transition Services Program,” his colleague said. Michael collaborates with teachers and community organizations to ensure students receive the support they need. His unwavering commitment makes him an invaluable member of the school community.
Robert Gavigan – Clerk, eCademy High School
Robert Gavigan stepped into a complex role at eCademy High School during a period of transition and uncertainty. As a receptionist handling a diverse student population of over 3,500 students, Robert quickly mastered the intricate processes unique to the school. His dedication and customer service skills shone through.
“During a very stressful time for both students and staff, he quickly embraced the importance of customer service and advocacy for students and families,” an eCademy counselor said.
In addition to being bilingual and a full-time college student, Robert consistently provides patient and compassionate support. “Robert is able to find guidance and seek answers in ways to help keep students engaged in their education,” the counselor added.
His professionalism, empathy, and determination make him a cornerstone of the eCademy community. Robert’s journey from temporary employee to full-time staff member is a testament to his dedication and drive.
Romie McCoy – Behavior Redirector, Reginald Chavez Elementary School
Romie McCoy’s impact at Reginald Chavez Elementary School goes beyond her official role as a Behavior Redirector. She works tirelessly to help students practice self-regulation skills to succeed in the classroom.
A Reginald Chavez teacher praised her efforts, saying, “Romie works hard to help students learn and practice self-regulation skills so that they can be successful in the classroom. She is an asset to our school community.”
Romie’s ability to connect with every student is a defining quality. The teacher shared, “All the students at Reginald Chavez know and trust her because of her excellent rapport with all students.” Her dedication, kindness, and genuine care create a nurturing environment where students feel supported and understood.
Carlos Trujillo – Dean of Students, Lowell Elementary School
Carlos Trujillo wears many hats at Lowell Elementary School, and he wears each one with dedication and a tireless spirit. A colleague highlighted his versatility and commitment: “Whether it is mopping a floor, dealing with a student in distress, or letting a teacher cry on his shoulder, he is always available.”
From lunch duties to covering the front desk, Carlos seamlessly steps into any role necessary for the school’s success. Beyond his administrative duties, Carlos fosters a positive atmosphere with his quick wit and thoughtfulness. “He seems to remember to acknowledge people for their efforts and thank them for it,” his colleague shared.
His kindness extends beyond the school, as he supports the team and their families with generous acts of compassion. The colleague aptly summarized his indispensable role: “Most people are replaceable; he is not.” Carlos’s dedication and boundless energy make him a vital part of the Lowell community.
How to nominate an employee
You can nominate an employee by filling out the Employee Recognition online application. Nominations must be completed by someone other than the nominee. Self-nominations are not eligible for consideration.
Award recipients will be selected monthly by a Peer Praise Task Force.
