Groundbreaking Ceremony Celebrates NW K-8 School

The new APS school for students in kindergarten through eighth grade will be located near Nusenda Community Stadium.

Albuquerque Public Schools hosted a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating a new K-8 school being built to alleviate elementary and middle school overcrowding in the Northwest quadrant of the district.

The as-yet named school, scheduled to open in 2018, will be designed similarly to George I. Sanchez Collaborative Community School for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The design moves beyond the traditional isolated classroom toward small collaborative learning environments that encourage mentorship and community between grade levels. Students will share a gym, kitchen/cafeteria and multimedia center. George I Sanchez opened in Southwest Albuquerque near Atrisco Heritage Academy in 2015.
