2018-19 School Calendar

For the first time in many years, spring break aligns with UNM's.

The 2018-19 school calendar approved by the Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education has students returning to class on Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, and wrapping up the school year on Wednesday, May 22, 2019.

Winter break for students stretches from Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, to Friday, Jan. 4, 2019 (which is a training day for school staff). Second semester starts on Jan. 7, 2019.

And, for the first time in several years, spring break is at the same time as UNM's during the week of March 11, 2019.

The district sought public input on an earlier version of the calendar, which was posted to the APS website and Facebook pages and included in the district’s community newsletter. Based on that feedback, the calendar was altered slightly when many of those commenting requested a little extra time off before Christmas for holiday prep and travel.

Another frequent request was to align spring break with UNM's, which was possible in 2019 because it doesn't conflict with state-mandated testing as it had in previous years.

Also, second semester parent conferences will be held just before spring break on Thursday and Friday, March 7-8, 2019, for all three levels – elementary, middle and high school – another frequent request of those providing input.

Next year's calendar has many similarities to this year's including a two-day fall break, a three-day break at Thanksgiving and time off for Labor Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day and the Vernal Holiday. It also includes a teacher training day after winter break, which extends the students' holiday to Jan. 7, 2019.

Schools are already closed on Veterans Day, which falls on a Sunday in 2018.
