Hi, I'm gonna try to keep this short because I already know we have so many speeches today. However, good morning. I'm Ona Edeh, and I'm this year's salutatorian at Volcano Vista high school.

I also wanna give a big shout out to our valedictorian, Evelyn Pinon. So, let's give her a round of applause.

I wanna first start off by thanking my family, friends and teachers because I could not have done it without their support. Most importantly, I wanna thank the most important women in my life, my mom and my sister, who have been perfect role models and I would nev, and I will forever look up to them.

None of us actually thought this day would come. When I first heard we had 165 days left of school, I was surely counting the days, hours, minutes, seconds and milliseconds. But the day is finally here. During those last 165 days left of school, I drowned myself in AP classes and clubs I attended every week during lunch and looking back now, I wish I had cherished those last days because I know now more than ever that nothing lasts forever. And that is what makes memories precious because it ends. High school was not like how many of us dreamed of. It didn't come with singing and dancing.

And I will never forgive "High School Musical" for setting my expectations that high but (laughs) high school wasn't all too bad. Some of us learned how to drive, got our first jobs and cars, experienced our first heartbreaks, and even met our lifelong best friends. It was also filled with corny jokes, especially for Mr. Finn and knowing that you can always run to Mr. Woods' room for any time you needed help. But with sunshine comes the rain, and on the days it was tough, it was tough. Waking up every morning wasn't easy.

And we cared more about passing than learning. We were living in routine like robots, pleasing the people around us just to survive the day. And that was before the pandemic. (laughs) Two years ago, our world was flipped upside down. We lived in fear and isolation, which led to a lack of communication and a lack of understanding of others in an already divided nation. So, I dare anyone say that we did not try. Even though we're all graduating together, we're at different stages in our lives. Some of us have it completely under control and others are scared of what's next after high school, even myself included.

I may be this year's salutatorian but I'm no better than the rest of you guys here. I'm just as scared, excited and eager to see what the future has to offer. Yes, our hopes and dreams may change and even fail, but at least it was ours to pursue. After everything we've been through these four years, there's just no way we can give up now, there's just no way. If there's one thing I have learned it is that we have a lot more to learn. This part of our lives is over and it has been great. It was great to be a Hawk. Congratulations!

Good morning, everyone. My name is Vernadette Norman-Chavez and I am the proud principal of Ventana Ranch Elementary School. And on behalf of the staff at Ventana Ranch, I am here to congratulate the 2022 graduates of Volcano Vista High School (laughs), and yes, Ventana Ranch Elementary School but Volcano Vista High School and tell you that we are very proud of you. Well done and way to go.

Many of these students I have had the pleasure of knowing since they were seven years old and I called them "Mine" as they were students at Ventana Ranch. And it was students like Anastasia, Brayden, Maya, so many, many other students that I had the pleasure of spending time with. And that makes today even more special for me. As an elementary school educator and leader, we have the privilege of being there at that very first day at the beginning of this amazing adventure, that very first day when we practically have to pry them from the arms of their parents and then convince them to stay a while. And by a while, I mean like six years.

And then for the next six years, in exchange for their time, we promise to be there for every lost tooth, to celebrate with them as they learn their multiplication facts, and then to cheer them on as they go on to those very next steps, remind them what it means to be a good friend, and encourage them along the way. Every day we lay the foundation for the next step, the next teacher and the next level. And then finally, we prepare them for this amazing day.

So today, I am reminded that it is true that together we can achieve the extraordinary and on behalf of every staff member that was there to greet you, to feed you, to encourage you, to motivate you, to coach you along the way, please know that we are proud of you. We recognized you. We know that you will do well and we congratulate you this day. And as you move onto your next adventure, my advice to you is to please remember to always treat yourselves and others with kindness and respect. And to all my former students at Ventana Ranch, thank you for the memories you shared with me. Be kind to yourselves and be happy. Thank you all.

Good morning. On behalf of Volcano Vista High School and everyone else, superintendent, Associate Superintendent DeBell, and Board President Montoya-Cordova, we present to you the 2022 class of Volcano Vista High School.

So, good morning. You know, one of the best parts about being a school board member is coming to graduation. It is the culmination of everything. And for those of us that choose to be on the Board of Education, this is what we work towards. We want to see our graduates succeed and make it to the finish line. So, there are three things that I wanna tell you and just remind you of before I accept your class. First of all, first of all, is that be proud of who you are and where you come from. You come from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and that's a lot to be proud of.

Two, and this one is really important, and just after listening to Principal Chavez, this really sits well with me on this. She must have stole my line here but you can be so many things in the world but one of the things that you must be is kind. Be kind to one another, be kind to your community be kind to your families and just live with that always first. Lead with kindness. And number three, and this is for all of our parents and all the adults in your lives, your siblings and your community members, and even your staff members on here, the last thing I wanna tell you is be safe. This is the beginning of your journey.

There's so much life ahead of you. And we wanna see you at your 10 year, your 20 year, 30, maybe even 50 year high school reunion. So be safe, take care of yourselves and be well. So, with that all said, I just wanna say to Principal Sedillo, on behalf of the Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education, I proudly accept the graduating class 2022 Volcano Vista. Go Hawks.

Please welcome to the stage your 2022 student body president, Angela Korte.

Hi class of 2022. Congratulations.

I think I can speak for all of us when I say that there were times that felt like high school was never going to end. But today, time has moved at light speed pace to bring us all together one very last time. We endured so much together, and as we graduate today, I have no doubt that we're going to be a class that shapes the world for the better. I am a firm believer that there's a little bit of good in everything, no matter how bad it seems. Freshman year, we are awkward and annoying, but we made some of the friends that we still have by our sides today. Sophomore year, we had to end the school year early but we also had an extra couple months of summer.

Junior year, being online burnt us out so badly. But it's also the reason most of us passed physics and stats.

Yeah. Cut to now, our senior year, where we have to say goodbye but we are also saying hello to infinite opportunities. We are a class like no other. After surviving a whole global pandemic, we managed to come back to school stronger and more vibrant than ever. From powder puff to prom, the class of 2022 brought so much energy and life to every single event. We proved to ourselves and to our community that we are stronger than ever thought possible. We brought home a record number of trophies, awards and scholarships. Any obstacle our way can be overcome.

And standing here today is a testament to that. It's bittersweet to walk away from the familiarity of our halls and the faces we see in them every day. But our hearts are strong. Just like returning to school this August, this moment is a stepping stone to more passion, life, prosperity and love. I know I've done just about as much living as everyone else here. So, I don't have a whole lot of advice to give but I am going to encourage each and every one of us here today to choose happiness, even Kid Cudi said to pursue it (laughs).

We can't say for certain where we'll be 10 years from now and I'm not gonna lie. Some of us will probably fall out of touch with each other. This might even be the last time I see some of you guys. I really hope not. But the point is that the future is very uncertain. So, starting right here, today, on our first day of true freedom, there's one thing we can do right now to make that big uncertain future a little less intimidating, be happy, find the good in everything, surround yourself with love, and no matter what you do, make sure that whatever you're choosing makes you happy.

There's no doubt in my mind that the class of 2022 will leave a huge impact on our world. Each of you has the most amazing capabilities and vision and I'm so proud to call you all my friends. We will always remember these days for the rest of our lives. Remember that, no matter where you go, you're always a Hawk. I hope that each and every one of you finds lots of sunny days, green lights and happiness wherever you go. Congratulations, class of 2022.
