Remote Learning

What You Need to Know About Remote Learning

Teachers will also provide academic intervention during remote learning in order to support student success.

  • Schools decide how best to serve their students.
  • The district has provided schools with parameters for in-person learning. The health of students and staff is top priority, so all schools must meet safety guidelines, including mask-wearing, social distancing, and group size.
  • There is no bus transportation provided during remote learning except for students in the Special Ed in the Red program.
  • Grab and Go Meals will be provided three days a week at all elementary schools and three high schools.

About the Student's Day

  • At least three hours per day providing online instruction to students, which we call synchronous or live instruction.
  • Students required to complete additional assignments or practice activities during the remainder of the school day or asynchronous learning.
  • Breaks throughout the day
  • Office hours with teachers
  • Guidance and assistance to families

Essential Standards

  • Essential Standards are enduring and relevant standards that spiral from one grade to the other and are foundational to learn in one grade to move on to the next grade.
  • Curriculum & Instruction created the list of essential standards using the the expertise of the Teacher Learning Network (TLN) and information identified by national organizations like Achieve the Core.
  • This prioritized the standards and left room for teachers to add in other standards

Measuring Student Progress

  • Constant meaningful feedback in the teaching process
  • Communicating with students and families frequently about student progress
  • Asset-base approach
  • Acknowledging the impact of educational disruption and addressing the "COVID-19 slide"
  • Using the essential standards to define grade-level pre-requisites that may need to be re-taught and focus on essential grade-level standards to target student learning
  • Embedding Social Emotional Learning and relationship building into classroom routines and core content
  • Providing an interim assessment schedule and strategy to monitor student academic progress and adjust instruction
  • Outlining focused academic interventions and data collection systems for students who are not making adequate academic progress

Grading and Attendance

  • Grades should represent student proficiency on the essential standards or key content
  • Attendance during remote learning is based on the extent to which a student has engaged in remote learning. 
  • Attendance is not based on student understanding of their classwork or their grade in the class.
  • Attendance is measured on a student's engagement during the remote learning time period. 

Student Engagement

  • Students will need to attend scheduled classes online, access and complete assignments online, and engage in and spend time learning.
  • Teachers will need to communicate with students and families, understand individual needs of their students, and assess and evaluate level of student engagement and progress.
  • Schools and Departments will need to work cooperatively to determine student and teacher needs – resources, supports, professional development; and continue to reach out to families to assess and evaluate needs – resources, supports, technology, connectivity.
