Ramadan celebration 2025 begins the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025 and ends Sunday, March 30, 2025. A Ramadan Overview, Tips for Educators, and information about Eid Al-Fitr.
Ramadan Overview
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered one of the holiest months by Muslims around the world. It is a month of fasting "not eating or drinking form sun up to sun down), prayer, self-discipline and reflection, community, family and charity. Due to it being on a lunar year calendar, the timing of Ramadan changes every calendar year. It is important to be aware of when it is happening each year in order to be culturally/linguistically responsive to Muslim students and families.
Tips For Educators:
Dos
- Be aware that students and families may be fasting and have difficulty with strenuous physical activity especially in the afternoon
- Encourage cultural and religious humility and awareness among all students and staff
- Say "Ramadan Kareem" which translates to "have a generous Ramadan"
- Provide time and space for students to pray if they wish
Do Nots
- Plan food centric activities for students or families during Ramadan unless it is after sunset
- Say "Happy Ramadan." This is not appropriate.
Eid Al-Fitr (3-29 through 3-30)
The end of Ramadan is marked by the celebration of Eid Al-Fitr. The greeting on this day is "Eid Mubarak." If Eid Al-Fitr falls on a school day, expect many Muslim students to be absent.
