Ramadan Overview
The ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar is considered one of the holiest months for Muslims around the world and it is called Ramadan. It is a month of fasting (from sun up to sun down), prayer, self-discipline, reflection, community, family and charity for Muslims. Muslims also strive to cultivate virtues such as humility, empathy, and gratitude. The fasting experience fosters empathy for the less fortunate and reinforces the importance of self-discipline and control over one's desires. In some countries working hours are reduced to six hours during Ramadan.
Challenges for Students During Ramadan
Students may experience changes in energy levels and concentration due to altered eating and sleeping patterns and may not maintain the same level of academic performance during Ramadan due to fatigue or reduced focus. Attendance and punctuality may be affected, especially during the early morning hours. Students may struggle with dehydration and may experience social pressure to participate in extracurricular activities, events, or social gatherings during Ramadan.
Recommendations for Teachers During Ramadan
Teachers should be aware that some Muslim students may be fasting and it may be difficult for students to participate in rigorous exercise in the afternoons. Some students may appear tired. Please avoid food centric activities during Ramadan. This is a good time to discuss cultural awareness and religious diversity. Please be aware of dietary restrictions during school events or gatherings. One way you can support Muslim students is to offer them time and a space for them to pray.
Eid al-Fitr
The end of Ramadan is marked by the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. The greeting on the end day of Ramadan is Eid Mubarak.
