Kuumba Creative Contest is a contest hosted by the APS Office of Equity and Engagement with the purpose of highlighting the self-expression of our students within APS through creation to showcase their Cultures, Communities, and Experiences. Showing how those things helped to create the identity that they have today.

The theme of the Creative Contest is Kuumba, which is a Swahili word that means Creativity. It also holds significance in the African diasporic holiday of Kwanzaa where a saying is attached to it " To always do as much as we can in the way that we can in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than when we inherited it”.

Through the Kuumba Creative Contest we want students to reflect on their culture and the community they have inherited and to think of how through their creativity that they can leave their communities more beautiful, and beneficial to themselves and others.

These are the 3 categories in which students send a submission under:

  • ART ( painting, sculpture, drawing, mixed media, photography and computer-generated.)
  • Literature (Poetry, Short story, Speech, and Creative writing)
  • Media ( Instrumental demonstration, singing, rapping, content creation, presentation, dance.)
