Three APS Students Going to State Spelling Bee

More than 40 students participate in the districtwide bee held on Jan. 17.

Three students from across the district will take part in a state wide spelling bee. They are

1st Place:  Phoebe Witt, 5th Grader at Bandelier Elementary School

2nd Place:  Garrick Tam, 5th Grader at Sandia Base Elementary School

3rd Place:  Samantha Selever, 5th Grader at Ventana Ranch Elementary School

Witt won on the championship word of zucchini, a variety of summer squash. 

The pronouncer for the district bee was Gerard Alonzo, a 5th Grade Teacher at Wherry Elementary School. 

Judges were APS Senior Director in the Office of Innovation and School Choice Dr. Joseph Escobedo, APS Summer Program Instructional Manager Laura Valdez, and APS Education Foundation Development Manager Lawren McConnell.

More than forty students participated from middle and elementary schools from across the district.  The students must have won a competition at their school prior to the district competition.  

The state bee will be held in March.
