Student of the Week: Leah Rael

Congratulations to Leah Rael, a 4th grader at Mitchell Elementary School, for being named the Student of the Week by the New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union and the APS Education Foundation.

About Leah:

Leah is an amazing young lady. She has the biggest heart and is really caring and giving. She’s a pillar of positive, heartfelt energy in her classroom. “During our school canned food drive she consistently encouraged her classmates to bring in food and they ended up donating 341 cans! Her class decided to make a donation to Joy Junction for the holidays.

They discussed the needs of the children there and decided that clothing, coats, shoes, books and slightly used toys would bring some relief to those children and their situation. Leah turned this compassionate act into a personal quest! She filled five large garbage bags with her beloved items and gracefully parted with them for the opportunity to enrich someone else’s life,” according to her teacher.

Favorite subject:

She loves reading and writing. When our library had the Read for the Stars campaign, she was the one student in the class who persuaded the most adults in her life to sponsor her for reading. She single-handedly earned her class an ice cream party and $187 for their class library!

Hobbies or activities, both at school and outside of school:

Leah loves volleyball and singing. She is a member of the Mitchell Chorus. She loves books and spends a lot of time reading.
