Student of the Week: Imeh McIver

Congratulations to Imeh McIver, a 10th grader at nex+Gen Academy High School, for being named the Student of the Week by the New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union and the APS Education Foundation.

Tell us a little about your school experience:

I have a lot a fun at the school that I go to. Nex+Gen definitely makes learning fun and I enjoy it. After my first semester I realized that I am really good at the project-based learning (PBL) process. I did very well at leading a team and organization. These skills I found key to be a thriving student at nex+Gen. I also found it very difficult sometimes because outside of school I train to be a dancer so I don’t get home until 8 p.m. for six nights of the week. This makes doing school work just a little bit harder, especially on the days that I have to collaborate with classmates on work that needs to be done. Somehow I make it happen. Participating as a member of student government is also a lot of work, but it pays off because as a team we have wonderful results at the end like successful fundraisers and dances. Overall nex+Gen has been very good to me and I will love to continue here.

What is your favorite course?

World Studies; this class is a combination of Humanities, English 10 and Geography. Learning about different aspects of culture in the world interests me and the course is all about that.

What are your plans for the future?

I would love to get accepted in to NYU, Columbia, or Fordham University’s dance. Or, do something else in university, like study business. I feel like you could do a lot with a business degree.
