Student of the Week: Hannah Stark

Congratulations to Hannah Stark, an 8th grader at Taft Middle School, for being named the Student of the Week by the New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union and the APS Education Foundation.

About Hannah:

Tell us a little about your school experience:

I like school and learning new things. I also like to see my friends. I enjoy making people feel good. I have always had good teachers and have learned a lot from them.

At school I have been able to help raise money for Paws and Stripes (nonprofit providing service dogs to wounded veterans) and participate in drama in the afterschool program. I want everyone to feel good about themselves and I try to take a stand against bullying.

Education is very important to me because if we didn’t learn new things, we wouldn’t be as far as we are today. We are still creating new things so we need to learn as much as possible to be successful.

What’s your favorite subject?

My favorite subject is language arts because I love to read and create a movie in my mind. Reading causes me to think about different issues and ideas. Reading helps me to make good choices that I know are correct. I also love to write. I really enjoy using imagery so I can paint a mental picture.

My language arts teacher (Ms. Dearmond) says she is our "brain coach." I like the challenges that I get in her class and how she causes me to really think.

What are your hobbies or activities, both at school and outside of school?

I go to afterschool drama. At my house I cook for my family and I love to make art with food. I like to make gifts for the people around me. I help take care of our animals and get paid to house sit and take care of other people’s animals.

During the spring and summer I help my grandpa with his orchard and chickens. I also help my mom with her garden. I take fruits and vegetables to the market to earn money.
