Student of the Week: Courtney Schmidt

Congratulations to Courtney Schmidt, an 8th grader at James Monroe Middle School, for being named the Student of the Week by the New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union and the APS Education Foundation.

Tell us a little about your school experience:

I enjoy school now, but it hasn’t always been easy. In elementary school I truly struggled, but I have managed to cope with my dyslexia. In middle school my academics improved with help from my teachers and a tutor, Mrs. Atwood, who helped me in the summers. If you can’t read well, your school work is hard. My sixth grade teachers were helpful and I learned to manage my time to complete the workload. I struggled but it paid off; I was named student of the year for 6th grade. My goal that year was to get perfect attendance and I did even though the last week I had a broken foot and was on crutches. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout the middle school and now I am in National Junior Honor Society. School isn’t always easy, sometimes it seems impossible.

My advice to any student is to go to school every day so you won’t get behind. Also, make lots of friends.

What’s your favorite subject?

My favorite subject is math. My 6th grade teacher prepared me for enriched math. I was reluctant to take the advanced class in 7th grade since I wasn’t advanced in 6th, but I loved it! This year I am in honors algebra. I enjoy the class even though it is challenging and lots of work. We have projects each month; my favorite project was making math poems. Another that was fun was the house plans project using equations to figure the room size. I even got my dad involved with the drawing of the house plans – showing me the various symbols used.

What are your hobbies or activities, both at school and outside of school?

I have been on the JMMS’s Razzle Dazzle Dance team since sixth grade. Last summer I started bowling and have been on two leagues. I even got a turkey, (three strikes in a row) in one game. I now have my own bowling ball, so my score has improved. I love the water; I got to swim with dolphins at Discovery Cove in Florida. When I’m not doing school work, I like to shop, spend time with my friends and make people laugh.
