Student of the Week: Clara M. Aguirre

Congratulations to Clara Aguirre, an eighth grader at Van Buren Middle School, for being named the Student of the Week by the New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union and the APS Education Foundation!

Tell us a little about your school experience:
I started kindergarten without knowing any English and I did have a bilingual class, but going into first grade I moved to an all English class. Knowing nothing of English and only having another student to translate for me, I began my new life and a great challenge. In third grade, I was now advanced in my learning and was tested for gifted, and passed the test. Getting into Van Buren Middle School I started an entire new challenge. After seventh grade, my teacher, Aleli Colon, saw potential in me and sent me to try Algebra with the eighth grade teacher. Yes, I fit in just fine. Now in eighth grade, I’m taking Gifted Social Studies at Van Buren Middle School and Geometry Honors at Highland High School for my first block.

What’s your favorite subject?
My favorite subject is Math. I like all kinds of math, but my favorite is Algebra.

What are your hobbies or activities, both at school and outside of school?
I am in the school’s choir and guitar group. I also love sports (volleyball, basketball, and soccer). Another thing is sometimes during school I have an extra period left over and I’m an office-aid, library-aid and nurse-aid. Also, when our school hosts an event, I am always happy to translate for any teacher. Outside of school I love to listen to music, dance, and spent time with my family. Right after school my first priority is my homework and helping my sisters with their homework. Also I love helping my community and my neighborhood.
