You’re Not Alone: APS EAP Supports Staff Through Life’s Challenges
From anxiety to conflict resolution, employees say the district’s counseling program helps them stay focused, healthy and ready to serve students—with a little help from Peggy the Guard Goose.
As Counseling Awareness Month spotlights mental health and well-being, it’s the perfect time to recognize an invaluable APS resource dedicated to supporting those who support our students: the APS Employee Assistance Program, or EAP.
The APS EAP offers confidential counseling, conflict resolution and short-term support to all employees and their immediate family members. Staff often walk away with more than just advice—they gain perspective, peace of mind and practical tools to navigate life’s challenges, big or small.
"I think EAP is an invaluable resource for all APS staff and their immediate family members,” APS Therapist Judy Venczel said. “Supporting the emotional well-being of employees is good business and absolutely impacts the student experience in a positive way. Reducing mental health stigmas in the workplace is crucial to a healthy and productive work environment."
That commitment to staff well-being has left a lasting impression on many across the district.
“Thank you for your awesome advice,” one employee shared with the EAP team after an appointment. “I have made some changes in the way I approach things and I am feeling lighter and happier every day.”
Others expressed gratitude for EAP’s conflict mediation and compassionate listening, as well as the value of speaking to someone who understands school district employees.
“I appreciate the mediation and the support given,” another employee told the EAP team. “I feel like I can work with my peers and we have been able to get through a misunderstanding and start fresh.”
While the work EAP does is serious and vital, the team isn’t afraid to add a little lightness to its mission. Enter Peggy the Guard Goose—EAP’s new feathered (and fictional) mascot, brought in to remind everyone that it’s OK to smile through the stress. Keep an eye out for Peggy in the EAP office, honking encouragement and reminding visitors that it’s brave to ask for help.
Whether employees are struggling with stress, dealing with workplace dynamics or just need a space to talk, APS EAP is available. Because helping employees take care of themselves is one of the best ways to take care of our students.
