U.S. Department of Education bestows prestigious award on schools that are among the top performers in their state.

Students and staff at Ventana Ranch Elementary School were over the moon this week after U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona announced their school had been chosen as an Exemplary High Performing School and given the Blue Ribbon School designation.

“There were tears of joy, a lot of hugging, and high fives,” Principal Paula Garcia said. “Everyone was just thrilled.”

Ventana Ranch Elementary, which has about 600 students, was one of three New Mexico schools to receive the honor this year and one of just 356 schools nationwide. The award is given to schools that excel in academic performance or make significant strides in closing achievement gaps among different student groups.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, Exemplary High Performing Schools are among the top performers in their state as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

Garcia said her school is genuinely honored to receive the Blue Ribbon award, noting that it reflects the school community’s collective efforts and dedication.

“One of the unique strengths of our school is our unwavering commitment to following our curriculum with fidelity,” she said. “This approach ensures consistency and clarity in instruction, allowing us to provide a high-quality learning experience for every student.”

Garcia added the collaborative planning across grade levels that happens at Ventana Ranch is a cornerstone of its success.

“Teachers work closely to align their lessons and standards, creating a cohesive and supportive learning environment where students build on their skills year after year,” she said. “This strong alignment and collaboration have significantly contributed to the academic progress of our students, and I am proud to be part of such a dedicated team.”

Garcia said a schoolwide celebration will be held down the road, but on Friday, staff and students plan to wear blue to mark the achievement.

“I am just so proud,” she added.

White Sands School in White Sands Missile Range, and Zia Elementary in Clovis were also named 2024 Blue Ribbon Schools.

In a news release, the U.S. Education Department said National Blue Ribbon Schools are led by leaders who articulate a clear vision of instructional excellence and uphold high standards.

“They showcase effective teaching methods and offer robust professional development for their staff,” the agency said. “Data-driven instruction is a hallmark, and there is a concerted effort to ensure every student succeeds. Collaboration among families, communities, and educators is a key component of their success.”

Cardona, the education secretary, said the 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools serve as models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities.

“As we celebrate their achievements, let us look to these schools for inspiration as we champion education as the foundation of a brighter future for every child,” he said.
