Three APS Magnet Schools Earn National Certifications

Designations were created to recognize the most exemplary magnet schools in the nation.

It’s not just about school choice.

It’s about school choice with quality.

The latest evidence Albuquerque Public Schools magnet schools are hitting that mark arrived late last week when three schools were informed they have earned national certifications from the National Institute for Magnet School Leadership.

One school – College and Career High School – has earned a national certification. Two others – eCademy Virtual High School and San Antonito Elementary School – have reached a national certification demonstration status, the highest level possible.

Magnet Schools of America, the national association of magnet and theme-based schools, created the national certification process designed to recognize the most exemplary magnet schools in the nation and help them as they continue to grow and provide high-quality, innovative curriculum and instructional programs.

The certification process is based on the five pillars of magnet schools and the National Magnet School Standards of Excellence. These standards define the essential elements and characteristics of high-quality magnet programs.

"I'm very proud of our three magnet schools that went through the rigorous year-long process to become nationally certified and reach demonstration status. This recognition highlights our commitment to excellence, diversity, and innovation," said Francesca Ver Ploegh, executive director of Innovation.

The school year is only days old, but APS magnet schools – there are 26 –  have already had a big year: Last week, Cleveland Middle School was informed it was on track to join the acclaimed International Baccalaureate program.
