New Fine Arts film chronicles 'Hidden Heroes of Albuquerque's Music Programs.'

Catherine Cunningham has seen just about everything in her 29 years in the APS Musical Instrument Repair Shop: a note in the case of a bassoon from a student “willing” the instrument over to the next generation, beloved instruments that have been named, and an unlucky bass with a broken neck.

Cunningham and partner-in-crime Andy Pilcher lovingly restore these instruments year after year to ensure every APS student who wants to play an instrument has the opportunity at no cost to families. Their efforts are chronicled in a touching 13-minute film titled “Not the Last Repair Shop: The Hidden Heroes of Albuquerque’s Music Programs.”

The film was produced by the APS Fine Arts Department. Its title is a play on an Oscar-winning documentary about an instrument repair shop run by the Los Angeles Unified School District.
