Successful Superintendent’s Cup engages community on behalf of APS students
The APS Education Foundation Superintendent’s Cup has become a fundraising force.
The golf tournament, held Aug. 29 at Sandia Golf Club, was another rousing success and raised significant money for grant programs that have an effect in classrooms throughout the district.
Just as important, 236 golfers got to engage with Superintendent Gabriella Blakey and more than 230 students from throughout Albuquerque Public Schools.
Nearly $100,000 will go back to classrooms through the Foundation’s grant programs, which encourage submissions from every school through a competitive process.
“This tournament has been continually successful over a decade and the overwhelming support of the business community is humbling,” said Foundation Executive Director Shannon Barnhill. “From the volunteers, sponsors and the golfers, the support ensures our students are worth investing in. We are so grateful for the generosity and support.
The tournament’s title sponsor is B&D Industries and received the support of 44 volunteers who lent their time and expertise to the day-long event. The tournament included a variety of fun sidelights beyond golf, and featured gift bags, golf ball drop prizes and winners in a variety of drawings. The event was preceded the night before by a reception attended by key sponsors and members of the district’s leadership team.
Students also played a key role, showcasing key extracurricular activities available at APS, including band, JROTC, cheerleading and other outlets that attract and retain students.
The Super Cup, as it’s known, is a key component of the Foundation’s fundraising efforts throughout the year. It began more than 10 years ago, but is now a featured event for partners and friends of the district who want to support the Foundation.
“The monies raised at the tournament will have immediate impact and will be in the schools by November, helping our students reach their full potential,” Barnhill said.
