Third graders collaborate with professionals in virtual lesson hosted by Discovery Education and the Office of Innovation.

The Office of Innovation partnered with Discovery Education to host an Earth Day live bat lesson at San Antonito STEM Magnet School.

San Antonito, recently named an MSA Top Magnet School, was invited to participate in a challenge provided by LEGO and the Discovery Channel. The challenge was to find a way to preserve bats by making bat habitats or bat gardens.

The class chose to make a bat house, which it constructed using its MakerSpace/Roadrunner Lab.

The class took a virtual field trip to learn about bats, focusing on ways to protect them and things they need to survive in the wilderness. Recycled materials were used to build prototype models of bat homes.

Students woke up early on Tuesday, April 22, for Earth Day to meet guest speakers on Zoom. They took turns presenting their bat houses.

Students asked questions and heard feedback from professionals in the field. The class watched fifth graders from El Paso share their bat houses/gardens.

“It was a great first experience to collaborate with professional people with pretty cool careers,” Ms. Kayla said, referring to the work her third graders did. “We enjoyed collaborating with each other to finalize our bat house models.”
