Event brings careers — and cool vehicles — directly to students in one of APS' most diverse schools.

North Star Elementary School rolled out its third annual Career Fair on Wheels this week, transforming the campus into a hands-on hub of career exploration for all 538 students.

Organized by school counselor Kathie Hager, the event brought in a diverse lineup of community partners who showcased their careers not just with words, but with the equipment and vehicles that help them do their jobs every day.

“It is a really fun event where community partners give of their time to share career options with our students while also sharing with them their cool equipment and vehicles,” Hager said. “Kids like to see things. For them to actually see and feel when people talk about careers, it's a great way to excite careers in kids.”

From fire engines and first responders of all types to drilling and construction vehicles, everything at the fair had wheels — hence the event’s name.

North Star is one of Albuquerque Public Schools’ high-achieving elementary schools, and it’s very culturally diverse.

“Our student body and staff have families that speak 46 different languages and have lived in 33 countries and 46 U.S. states and territories, including Guam and Samoa,” Hager said. “We proudly display a poster reflecting how we work to be one North Star community.”

The Career Fair on Wheels reflects that spirit, uniting students from various backgrounds through shared curiosity, hands-on learning and a glimpse into their futures.
