Custodian's fast action prevents tragedy at lunchtime.

At Mark Twain Elementary, Head Custodian Eldon Montoya is known for his dedication, hard work and his support of everyone on campus. But earlier this month, his quick thinking and training made all the difference in a life-or-death moment.

During lunch in the cafeteria, a fifth-grade student began choking on a cherry tomato. Nearby students quickly alerted Montoya, who sprang into action. Remembering training he received years ago, he calmly performed the Heimlich maneuver, successfully dislodging the obstruction and allowing the student to breathe again.

Montoya, who has been with Albuquerque Public Schools for more than a decade, never expected to use the emergency training he received early in his career. But when the moment came, he didn’t hesitate.

“I never thought I would actually have to use it,” Montoya said. “But I did, and it worked.”

His heroic actions didn’t go unnoticed. Mark Twain Principal Desiree Earnest praised Montoya for his unwavering support of the school community.

"He's a great employee. I don't know what I would do without Eldon. He literally supports everyone here. He's amazing."

Principal Secretary and bookeeper Colleen Burke echoed that sentiment, thanking Montoya for his bravery and commitment to student safety.

“In a time of crisis, you remained calm and showed extraordinary skill,” she said. “Your selfless act exemplifies the values of our community, and we are incredibly fortunate to have you on our team.”

Montoya’s actions serve as a reminder of the critical role APS staff play in keeping students safe—not just in expected ways, but in moments that truly matter.
