First Transfer Window Was a Smashing Success
Nearly all priority requests were granted in January rollout.
APS is a first-choice district.
Thanks to a renewed commitment to school choice and a streamlined process, Albuquerque Public Schools successfully modernized its transfer system this winter, with hundreds of students receiving a priority transfer to different schools.
"I am excited about this system change within our district that will better enable parents to plan and schools to serve each and every one of our students,” said APS Deputy Superintendent Antonio Gonzales. “As a district, we need to constantly find innovative and convenient ways for our parents to interface with us. I think this is a good example of this effort."
Of the 1,707 students who applied for a transfer or enrolled in January, all but 16 received their first choice. Magnet school approvals will be sent in full after their lottery dates.
The transfer process, which relies on families signing in with a ParentVue account, was installed at the beginning of the year and helped ease what once was a cumbersome method to transfer or enroll. The new system was not without its initial bugs but is a vast improvement, officials said.
Online registration in ParentVUE will open Feb. 20 for the ‘25-26 school year and parents are encouraged to complete their registration as soon as possible. Please make sure you have accepted the transfer in ParentVUE prior to Feb. 19 to lock in your offer before beginning this step.
By doing so, parents are:
- Ensuring schools have updated emergency contact information.
- Provided with opportunities for free or reduced fees for summer school and testing based on completing the Household Income Survey.
- Provided with a Consent for Wellness and Equity Alliance mobile school based health centers.
- Provided with a questionnaire on McKinney Vento/Title One Homeless to identify families in need of services.
- Finalizing your commitment to the school for the upcoming school year.
As the process continues, here are some things to note:
- Parents will receive letters from each school they applied for and can see the status of each transfer request prior to making their selection.
- Upon accepting the school choice, the school will be notified. Once the school accepts, the student’s 25-26 enrollment will be created for the accepted school. Next, the schools should be reaching out to families and inviting them to complete the 2025-26 online registration packet to finalize their commitment for the upcoming school year.
