Exploring the Future
Atrisco Elementary hosts inspiring career day.
Atrisco Elementary School recently opened its doors to the future during its second annual Career Day, welcoming about 25 professionals from various fields to share their expertise, experiences and enthusiasm with students.
“Hosting this event is incredibly meaningful for our students,” said Bobbi Lujan, school counselor at Atrisco. “It gives them the opportunity to hear from and interact with important members of the community, broadening their awareness of career possibilities. We aim to bring in a wide variety of careers and professions to inspire them. I think we did a great job of that this year!”
From paramedics to business professionals, the event featured an array of career paths to spark curiosity and motivation among students. Adam Fuentes, a paramedic with the Bernalillo County Fire Department, attended his first career day and found the experience rewarding.
“Depending on the age of the children, this shows them that they don't need to be afraid of the fire department, that we're there to help,” Fuentes said. “It shows them that this can be a good career path and they can also have fun while doing a job that helps their community. I like the interaction with the kids—they seem to be having fun. The fire truck always attracts them.”
Atrisco Elementary’s Career Day isn’t just about learning what’s out there—it’s about helping students make real-world connections. Fifth-grade teacher Miranda Campa emphasized the role the event plays in supporting career and college readiness.
“Career Days expose our students to different career paths they may not have been aware of,” Campa said. “It allows them to ask questions and learn more about potential careers.”
In addition to professional speakers, Atrisco’s Student Council members played a leadership role in the event, acting as school ambassadors and engaging directly with guest professionals. Their involvement helped strengthen leadership skills and build confidence while representing their school with pride.
With another successful Career Day in the books, Atrisco Elementary is already looking forward to next year’s event, continuing its mission to inspire young minds and connect learning to real-life possibilities.
