APS Stays Steady in National Assessment

Posted January 29, 2025, 10:48 AM. Updated January 29, 2025, 10:48 AM.

NAEP scores released this week.

Albuquerque Public Schools’ performance in a nationally recognized set of assessments remained statistically unchanged, according to the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the “Nation’s Report Card.”

District proficiency rates in fourth- and eighth-grade reading and mathematics have not increased significantly since the previous assessment in 2022 or the pre-pandemic 2019 survey, but they also have not seen significant declines during these same time periods as APS ramps up its efforts on Goals 1 and 2 – improving proficiency in third-grade reading and eighth-grade math for students identified in the Yazzie-Martinez court decision, plus African American students.

“The results in this assessment are important because they are another data point we can use to look at progress,” said APS Superintendent Gabriella Blakey.

APS Board of Education President Danielle Gonzales was appointed late last year to the prestigious National Assessment Governing Board, which oversees NAEP.

APS is one of 26 large urban districts included in the Trial Urban Districts Assessment, commonly known as TUDA. Other TUDA districts include Atlanta, Chicago, Las Vegas, Nev., Dallas, Denver and Houston. APS students are oversampled in order to facilitate comparisons with the other large districts across the country.

APS’ most recent proficiency rates stood at 23 percent for fourth-grade reading and 26 percent for fourth-grade mathematics, according to the assessment. Proficiency rates were 20 percent and 17 percent, respectively, in eighth-grade reading and math in 2024.

NAEP has long been a consistent measurement tool for districts around the nation to gauge how they are doing over time compared to other states and districts. Its results have helped decision makers and the public understand student progress across time and in several subject areas.
