APS Plans Springtime Push to Battle Hunger
Students, district departments get ready for April drive to help refill critically low shelves in the McKinney-Vento program.
APS Activities is renewing its efforts to drive out hunger for students and families in need.
A “Spring Into Action” campaign – a food drive to benefit the McKinney Vento program – is scheduled for April 26, from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the district’s Berna Facio Professional Development Complex, 3315 Louisiana Blvd.
Students involved in activities at APS are helping push the food drive at individual schools, and the APS department with the most donations will win a lunch, courtesy of a community minded corporate donor.
"After speaking with Joey Wilson, the McKinney Vento Program Warehouse manager, we realize the shelves are lower than ever before. APS Activities decided that we need to have a spring food drive to help restock these shelves,” said Leslie Coe, activity manager for the district. “All APS Schools have students who benefit from this program and APS Activities recognizes the need to restock these items. We’re hoping this will be the largest collection of donations they've done. APS students will be on hand to collect your donated items so you don't even have to do the heavy lifting."
The event is similar to the successful Drive Out Hunger event last November. Most needed items include: cheese or peanut butter crackers, beef jerky, applesauce, pudding, fruit cups, granola and cereal bars, single-serve soups, ramen noodles, packaged nuts, trail mix, individual packets of oatmeal rice, beans and plastic utensils.
Any non-perishable donation will be accepted.
