KOB Features Retired APS Educator Who Continues to Teach
Cyntella Shaver retired in 2009 but continues to volunteer in the classroom
Cyntella Shaver knows all too well that stepping away from your life’s work isn’t so easy – not even after retirement.
Ms. Shaver retired as an Albuquerque Public Schools teacher in 2009, but she is still showing up at Susie Rayos Maron Elementary every school day to work with students. She does it as a volunteer in Mrs. Susan Leo Russell’s classroom.
KOB featured Ms. Shaver on its Monday night newscast as part of its “Heart of New Mexico” series.
“As a volunteer I can do what I want to do and work with the kids,” she told reporter Ryan Laughlin.
“That’s why it’s so much fun to come into a first-grade classroom,” she added. “Because they give you life.”
