Award-Winning Journalist Joins APS Communications Team
Martin Salazar, a former Albuquerque Journal City Editor and journalist of 25 years, began a new chapter in his career as Communications Director for Albuquerque Public Schools this week.
Salazar is a native New Mexican who credits former Las Vegas, New Mexico teacher Trish Guenther and UNM Journalism professor Hank Trewhitt for recognizing his writing talent and encouraging him to pursue a journalism career.
“I believe in public education and am eager to use my skills and talents to foster its mission and promote the work being done by all of the Trish Guenthers, students, support staff, and community that make up Albuquerque Public Schools,” Salazar said.
Over the decades, Salazar reported on some of the most significant crises New Mexico has experienced, politics and a plethora of stories that changed lives and brought us closer to everyday people who have lived through extraordinary circumstances. Salazar worked his way up from UNM’s beloved Daily Lobo to the Las Vegas Optic, where he served as editor and publisher. At the Albuquerque Journal, his success in reporting culminated in his appointment to the Editorial Board and eventually as one of the newspaper’s most important positions - City Editor.
“We are honored to have a veteran reporter like Martin join the district,” said APS Superintendent Scott Elder. “Martin’s expertise at storytelling, breaking down difficult issues so you don’t have to be an educator to understand and engage, combined with his vast knowledge of our city will greatly benefit our students, staff and families.”
Salazar joins a small but mighty communications team that includes Monica Armenta, Executive Director of Communications, and Daniel Torres, Multimedia specialist.
