APS to Shift to Quarterly Grade Reporting Periods for 2023-2024 School Year
In a letter to the community, Chief of Schools Dr. Channell Segura says move aimed at bringing consistency to district
As a district, we are working to align and bring greater consistency to our systems and operations. One system we are looking at is how we can minimize variation and confusion in our district and community when it comes to grade reporting periods so that families and students can monitor their academic progress throughout the school year, and regardless of which school or level, they can expect final grades in each cycle to be consistently posted and finalized.
Currently, we have schools that are on different grade reporting periods and we would like to have our district follow one. In researching what other districts do, the most common grade reporting cycle follows a four academic quarter model. We surveyed APS teachers and principals to get their feedback and only 20% were opposed to the change. Based on this information, as we create our calendar for the 2023-2024 school year, we plan to shift to a quarterly grade reporting model. Our shift also aligns with the New Mexico Athletics Association expectations, which requires students to have a 2.0 grade point average with no F’s, based on a 4.0 grading scale, or its equivalent, for the semester grading period immediately preceding participation.
