APS Graduations Underway

Posted April 24, 2023, 2:55 PM. Updated May 22, 2023, 10:10 AM.

A look at what to expect and what’s not allowed at commencement ceremonies.

Graduation season at Albuquerque Public Schools kicked off on April 28, with College & Career High School hosting its commencement ceremony at the Berna Facio Professional Development Center.

Graduation ceremonies for other APS high schools will be held during the week of May 15.

If you’re planning to attend any of the graduation ceremonies be prepared to walk through a metal detector. APS will have multiple metal detectors set up at each of the venues, a first for APS graduations. And organizers are asking that attendees leave purses and water bottles at home. Same goes for that bouquet of balloons for your graduate.

Regular purses will not be allowed, although clear bags are fine. As in prior years, all bags will be searched.

Other items not allowed at APS graduation ceremonies are:

  • Food
  • Beverages, including water
  • Balloons
  • Signs
  • Noisemakers
  • And glass of any kind, including flower vases.
