APS Elementary Students Win Awards in National Art Competition

Winners attended Georgia O'Keeffe, Double Eagle, and S.Y. Jackson elementary schools.

Four APS students won awards for their art in a national competition.

The students – from Georgia O’Keeffe, Double Eagle, and S.Y. Jackson elementary schools – were recognized by National PTA. The theme of this year’s Reflections student art program was Show Your Voice!

Winners were:

  • Andrew Auyang, Award of Excellence in film production (grades 3-5) for “Save the Trees.” He attends Georgia O’Keeffe.
  • Evan Olson, Award of Excellence in music composition (grades 3-5) for “Dialogue.” He attends Double Eagle Elementary.
  • Andreas Gallis, Award of Merit in photography (pre-K through grade 2) for “The Future of Our Planet is in Our Hands. Andreas attends Georgia O’Keeffe.
  • And Carmelita Garcia, Award of Merit in photography (grades 3-5) for Endangered.” Carmelita attends S.Y. Jackson Elementary.

Award of Excellence winners will receive a $200 scholarship. National PTA received over 900 entries from students in 44 states. The organization handed out more than 200 awards.

“New Mexico PTA is proud of all of our student artists,” said New Mexico PTA President Tami Baker in a news release. “We are excited to watch this program grow in our state as parents, educators, and community members affirm the importance of the arts in education and mental well-being.”
