APS Board Hoping to Select New Superintendent by Spring
Executive Committee working on RFP for search firm.
The president of Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education said Wednesday that preparations are underway to launch a search for Superintendent Scott Elder’s successor.
The board and Elder announced on June 7 that Elder will leave the district when his current contract expires on June 30, 2024.
Board President Yolanda Montoya-Cordova said during Wednesday’s board meeting that the goal is to select Elder’s successor by spring to have enough time for a smooth transition.
“We’re really committed to making this process as transparent as possible,”
Montoya-Cordova said. “There’s more to come. We want to make sure that the
community is engaged.”
She said the board’s Executive Committee has met to discuss the scope of work for a search firm. She said the executive committee is hoping to present that scope of work and the request for proposals to the full board on July 19 and to have the board select a search firm by the end of August.
In her briefing, Montoya-Cordova noted that there’s a great deal of work ahead of the board. That includes coming up with a budget for the search and setting a timeline. She said the board will also need to revise the superintendent’s job description so that it aligns with the board’s new goals and guardrails and the district’s new strategic plan and so that it’s in keeping with the Student Outcomes Focused Governance model APS is now operating under.
Montoya-Cordova said the board wants to engage the community in the search
process and will rely on the search firm to help it establish that process. She also noted that the timeline will need to factor in the November school board election. Two of the three board members whose terms are expiring are not planning to seek reelection.
