The annual APS Metro Youth Art Exhibit featuring the work of high school and middle school students kicks off Friday, March 8, with an award ceremony from 5:30 -7:30 p.m. in the conference rooms at Building M. Nearly 550 pieces will be included in the show, which runs through Tuesday, April 8.

Opening night is always an exciting event, with hundreds of parents, students, teachers, district employees and invited special guests in attendance. It is an opportunity to recognize students for their work in 18 different categories, and a way to celebrate the educators who guide them on their creative journey.

The professionally juried exhibit is sponsored by the APS Fine Arts Department. The art featured in the exhibit is created by APS students in a variety of high school visual arts classes. Selected work from middle school students is also displayed at the show.

Jurors are artists and educators with experience and expertise in their particular category. In addition, advanced art students selected by their high school art teachers serve as jurors to select one piece in each category to receive the Students’ Choice Award. Ribbons will be given for first through third place in each category as well as for honorable mentions. One student will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the UNM College of Fine Arts.

Some student artists will receive cash awards or gift certificates. The City of Albuquerque Public Arts Program will continue its tradition of purchasing several pieces from the show to become part of the city’s permanent public art collection. Bernalillo County also selects some pieces for their permanent collection.

Gallery hours for this year’s Metro Youth Art Exhibit will follow the Unified Arts Library schedule, and guests are allowed at any time during the day from 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.  The exhibit will also be open on two Saturdays: March 23 and March 30 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Parking is available at Milne Stadium, and entry is through the front doors of Building M – follow the signs to the Unified Arts Library.
