It's Graduation Season!

Graduation ceremonies for most APS high schools take place the week of May 13.

It is officially graduation season for Albuquerque Public Schools. Students, families, and friends will be celebrating with graduation walks, honors assemblies, banquets, and, of course, commencement.

This year, each of our high schools will have its own graduation webpage complete with a closed caption video of the ceremony and a list of graduates.

College and Career High School

College and Career High School was the first APS high school to host its commencement ceremony on Friday, May 3, at Tingley Coliseum. Of the 66 students who graduated from the dual-credit magnet school:

  • 36 received at least one CNM certificate or associate's degree
  • 26 graduated earned more than one CNM certificate or degree
  • Seven graduated with five or more certificates or degrees.

Nurse Pinning Ceremony

The Career Enrichment Center’s traditional Nurse Pinning Ceremony is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at the UNM Continuing Education Conference Center. This ceremony will celebrate the 32 graduates of the Licensed Practical Nursing Program, a unique high school accredited program that prepares high school graduates for entry-level nursing practice. It is the only LPN program in New Mexico and the only such program for high school students in the country.

The Black Student Union Rites of Passage Ceremony

The annual event will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 12, at Expo New Mexico in the African American Performing Arts Center. During the ceremony, graduating seniors receive Kente cloths as part of the tradition. The cloth is a form of non-verbal communication that expresses pride and identity.

Native American Graduating Seniors Banquet

Nearly 300 Native American high school seniors were recognized in April during the traditional Native American Graduating Seniors Banquet. About a dozen of the students earned stoles for tribal demonstration, bilingual seal, speech and debate, and community service. They can wear the decorative stoles at graduation.

Bilingual Seal

Another 250 or so students from 13 APS high schools will drape cords or stoles atop their graduation gowns to signify their achievement of earning a Bilingual Seal. Diplomas affixed with the bilingual seal means these students completed rigorous coursework allowing them to maintain, develop and advance in two languages.

Grad Walks

Many of the seniors who are graduating the week of May 10 will tour the halls in cap and gown at neighborhood elementary and middle schools where many of them once went. They’ll be celebrating their accomplishments on the eve of graduation, cheered by former teachers and school staff and inspiring future high school graduates including siblings, neighbors, and relatives who now attend the schools.

Congratulations to the Class of 2019!
