Art in STEM: 2018 Hispanic Heritage Month Art Contest

Deadline to submit artwork is Sept. 17

The Hispanic Leadership Outreach Committee at Sandia National Laboratories is partnering with Kirtland Air Force Base, NNSA Sandia Site Office and NNSA ABQ Complex to sponsor its Annual Youth Art Contest in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15). 

To get students involved and interested in STEM through art. This annual contest inspires students to be creative while using art to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

Family, Friends and Fiesta through Education and Awareness. Artwork and paragraph will be judged on its relation to this year’s theme.


  • Open to all K–12 students
  • Only one entry per student
  • Must be original artwork
  • Artwork will be judged on its relationship to this year’s theme
  • Must include up to one paragraph describing artwork and its correlation to theme (attach to back of artwork)
  • Artwork must be no larger than 48” x 36” x 1.5”
  • Mediums may include: Painting, Drawing, and Photography
  • Must consent to possible reproduction, distribution, and public display of artwork, and release Hispanic Heritage Month volunteers from any damages that may occur

DEADLINE: September 17, 2018


Attach the following information to the artwork (all information will be kept confidential):

  • Student Name
  • Student School
  • Student Grade
  • Student Phone Number
  • Teache Name/Phone Number
  • Teacher Email
  • Guardian Name/Phone Number
  • Guardian Email
  • Parent/legal guardian signature and date.

Drop off submissions at one of the following locations (September 14–17):

  • Main Library – 501 Copper Avenue NW (Copper & 5th – Downtown)
  • Cherry Hills Library – 6901 Barstow NE (Harper & Academy)
  • Taylor Ranch Library – 5700 Bogart NW (Montano & Unser)
  • South Valley Library – 3904 Isleta Blvd. SW (Isleta & Camino Del
    Valley SW)

Note: Please pick-up artwork at the location it was dropped off at. (October 5–8). All artwork not picked up by October 8 will be donated.


  • Winners will be notified prior to October 5
  • Winners will be recognized at their schools
  • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes will be awarded for Grades: K-5, 6–8 & 9–12
  • Winners artwork will be displayed at Sandia National Laboratories prior to being returned
    Prizes and/or educational supplies will be awarded
