Meet Selfless Senior Zach Marshall

We continue to introduce the 2018 Selfless Seniors who will be recognized the Gold Bar Gala on April 27.

When volunteers are needed, Zach already has his hand raised. He works to ensure that everyone has the support they need to face their challenges, whether it be a health condition, a bully, poverty, hunger or just a lack of guidance and friendship.

Zach has the reputation of being the quiet helper, never seeking praise, always offering help. He participates in a very long list of clubs and organizations with a focus on service to others including Best Buddies, the Salvation Army, the Safe Student Alliance, the Albuquerque Kiwanians and Key Club, Locker 505 and many more. Zach is an accomplished athlete, student and artist. Even though he has plenty to brag about, Zach is known most of all for his humility.

Also passionate about animal welfare, Zach has recently been working as a volunteer student lobbyist this legislative session, lobbying on a bill that raises funding for spay and neuter programs in New Mexico. Zach has researched, developed policy points, advocated for, and has testified in House and Senate committee meetings on the importance of passing the bill.

Debora Eaton, school counselor at La Cueva High School writes, “Zach has volunteered for two years to read books with elementary students for the La Cueva High School Athlete Reading Program that I sponsor. Zach is kind-hearted, personable, and his caring nature is quickly felt by those that he encounters. I have observed Zach read with elementary students within our district; his gentle nature and genuine concern for the younger students was most evident. The elementary students warmed up to him quickly as he read to them and encouraged them to take school seriously. Zach has demonstrated that he is the perfect role model for others to follow.”

Thanks to the generosity of Frank Frost Photography, Zach and the 13 other 2018 Selfless Seniors will also be recognized at the Gold Bar Gala on April 27, 2018. The Gold Bar Gala, presented by Award Sponsors Comcast and Technology Integration Group, raises money for school and classroom grants awarded through the APS Education Foundation.
